I had the privilege of performing with a group of artists from Montreal for Charlottetown’s 2023 Art In The Open event. It was an emotional experience I will never forget. Below is a gently edited description provided by the artist.
She Cut Her Own Belly Open is first of all an activist piece aiming to expose the structures that oppress marginalized people. It centers on discourses that celebrate the oppressed person’s resilience and hopes to show the violent underside of this praise, as a serenade that binds them to a position where they become responsible, with their newly acquired status of “resilient”, for overcoming any future trauma imposed on them.
The performance itself will consisted of 5 musicians following Joliz Dela Peña across the city, while serenading her with a song that praises her resilience. Musicians praise, but never help Joliz, as she carries a weight that keeps her on the verge of exhaustion. The musicians embody the societal gaze that fixes marginalized people in a position of vulnerability.

Performing with the Striped Shirt Band at Baba’s Lounge for their weekly Island Jazz show. This marked the first time a group presented (nearly) all original music. Composer Jacob Reddin is dope.
I played guitar and electric ukulele for an abbreviated set, underscoring the evacuation of a show in the adjacent hall. It was fire.
I participated in the 2023 Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute, an intensive 2-week program where I was able to study many facets of 17th century European music and perform solo and ensemble works on a theorbo.

I am very excited (and maybe a little nervous) to get back to performing live music, and I can’t think of a more exciting setting than a celebration of gaming, movies, music and more. I’ll be performing some original songs along with a couple of my favorite video game themes on Saturday, March 26 at 3:30pm.

The Gaithersburg UkeFest celebrates Mother’s Day on May 15th with a showcase of artist playing songs for and/or about moms. I’ve prepared some of my mom’s favorite tunes, plus a special surprise. I can’t wait to see what the other performers have planned!
Join me on April 22 for Finding Your Song at the Gaithersburg Uke Fest! Head over to their workshops page to see what the other instructors are up to along with ticket information. There’s a lot of great stuff on the bill.
Finding Your Song with Ross Malcolm Boyd
“I could never do that.”
I have heard that so many times from so many people when talking about songwriting. I am here to tell you the same thing I have told countless folks: “If you want to write a song, you can write a song.”
In this workshop, I will walk you through some basic steps to get started writing songs. We will discuss lyric writing, composing music on the ukulele, and negotiating with that part of our brains that say we can’t. Along the way, we will write a song together. I hope you’ll use the skills we discuss to write a song on your own and present it at the recital the following week.
The optional recital will be held the following Thursday, April 29th, at the same time as this weeks workshop. You will not only get a chance to perform your new song, but get feedback from the instructor. The cost for the workshop is $30, and the cost for the workshop and recital is $50.
I have been invited to play the Gaithersburg Ukulele Festival on March 20! The theme is TV Show Theme Songs and I’m having a lot of fun putting my little set together.
